Ellison’s passion for performance extends beyond computing to flight and sailing–his contributions to professional sailing have brought new technology and techniques to the sport, where he continues to push the boundaries.

Ellison and Coutts’ new sailing series will feature six national teams competing across the world. Races are planned off the coast of Sydney, Australia; San Francisco, California; New York, New York; Cowes, England; and Marseille, France, culminating in a final showdown for a million-dollar prize. Unlike the America’s Cup regatta, all teams will race identical 50-foot catamarans capable of reaching speeds of more than 50 miles per hour. Technological improvements to the catamaran design have helped bring the art of sailing to the forefront of this competition. Each race will be broadcast live at SailGP.com to introduce the sport to more fans than ever before.

The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine will bring scientists across multiple disciplines and from around the world together to approach cancer from a more holistic perspective.

The Ellison Institute is designed to revitalize medicine’s approach to cancer research through a focus on art and its impact on the brain. This increased emphasis on culture is a driving force behind the Institute’s thoughtful aesthetics, which feature art showcasing the history of cancer. The facility will also host a test kitchen, in recognition of food’s impact on physical and mental health.

$200 million gift launches Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC

Larry Ellison has donated a lead gift of $200 million to the University of Southern California for the establishment of a cancer research center.

Ellison’s donation will support a new location for the prevention and treatment of cancer at USC. The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine aims to foster scientific collaboration across disciplines. It will feature spaces for cancer research, education, outreach, and community engagement. The facility will also host a test kitchen for culinary exploration, as well as unique art centered on the history of cancer and cancer research. Ellison’s lead gift is one of the largest contributions in support of cancer research and prevention.

Larry Ellison calls out performance and innovation deficiencies in Amazon Web Services at Oracle OpenWorld 2018.

After announcing the release of Oracle’s new Gen 2 Cloud infrastructure, Ellison criticized AWS for performance deficits and a lack of innovation. He also noted the advanced technology powering Oracle’s current autonomous services such as Oracle Autonomous Database Warehouse Cloud and Autonomous Transaction Processing.

Ellison has described ways in which these services can increase efficiency and security through self-patching and self-tuning capabilities. Performance differences were also highlighted earlier in the week, when Ellison demonstrated Oracle’s edge in benchmarks against AWS in computing, networking, and storage.

Newport Beach Tennis Club draws top players for Oracle Challenger Series

Larry Ellison’s Oracle Challenger Series has brought the world’s best tennis players to a tournament in Newport Beach in the lead-up to this year’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

The road to Indian Wells continues at Newport Beach Tennis Club with the third of four tournaments comprising the Oracle Challenger Series.

Ellison and Oracle CEO Mark Hurd created the series in 2018 to support American tennis players with professional aspirations. The Oracle Challenger Series offers potential champions opportunities to hone their skills on American courts. The two men and women with the most points at the end of the series receive wildcard entries into the BNP Paribas Open, and individual tournament winners also receive $125,000 apiece in prize money. Last year’s Oracle Challenger Series champion, Danielle Collins, has already seen professional success, reaching the semifinals  of the 2019 Australian Open.
